Assistant Manager – organic vegetables
Hugh is looking for an Assistant Manager at Kensons Farm
We are seeking a hands-on Assistant Manager to support the owners in day-to-day management while remaining actively involved in all practical operations. The role can be adapted to suit either a trainee or an assistant manager with experience. Do get in touch if you would just like to know more or have a chat.
About Us
We are an established business growing vegetables certified organic by The Soil Association on 10ha. There is a wide range of field and protected crops sold wholesale and retail. We have three weekly market stalls, a small farm shop and supplies to local and national box schemes. Field crops include brassicas, onions, leeks, carrots, parsnips, and squash. Small family farm committed to quality food production.
Key responsibilities of the assistant manager:
••Assisting Farm Manager with crop production, including tractor work
•Tractor work includes ploughing, cultivating, planting, mechanical weeding and harvesting
•Field irrigation during the growing season
•Dealing with crop covers and ensuring their efficacy
•Assisting with management of seasonal and temporary staff, and students.
•Leading by example, setting the pace and advising newcomers on efficiency.
•Monitoring crops to anticipate interventions
•Regularly meeting with Farm Manager and discussing work priorities and approach
•general farm work when required
About You
The ideal candidate will be a motivated individual who enjoys practical work, has a can-do attitude, a desire to problem-solve, and an eye for efficiency. The right mindset is more important than qualifications, and knowledge of organic vegetable production isn’t essential. You must have:
•Full UK driving licence
•Be over 25 (or nearly) to drive the van
•Experience with machinery and hitching on implements. Or the aptitude to learn.
•Excellent communication and people management skills
•Physically fit and a desire to get the job done whatever the weather
Hours and pay:
•You will work on an hourly rate, negotiable depending on skills and expertise.
•Basic 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. Some Saturdays during June-August when the work demands it, up to 48 hours per week. Not every Saturday. Sundays off.
•Summer hours longer by arrangement and when the work needs doing
•35 hour week during shorter winter days
•2 bed wooden lodge on farm available, with small garden and own garage
•Start date early 2026
